Groom’s hair-restoration timeline: when to book so results show in the wedding photos

Book a hair transplant at least a year before the wedding, and ideally a little earlier. The full result usually takes about 12 months to show. The early months also include a shedding phase you will not want in any photos.

This guide counts back from the wedding date, from the first consultation to the final trim. It also covers beard transplants for grooms who want both.

Why does a hair transplant need so much lead time?

Transplanted hair grows on its own schedule, and no amount of wedding pressure can speed it up. The transplanted hairs often shed within the first few weeks. Fresh growth tends to begin at about three months, and the full result shows at around a year.

So a procedure six months before the wedding would leave you only partway there on the day. The new hair would be growing, but likely still fine and filling in.

Building in a margin is sensible too. Everyone grows at a slightly different pace, and wedding dates sometimes move.

When should a groom book the first consultation?

Around 15 to 18 months before the wedding is a comfortable time for a first appointment. That leaves room to:

  • have your hair loss assessed on the Norwood scale and your donor hair checked;
  • talk through the hairline you want, and how it will look as you get older;
  • ask about a beard transplant if that is part of the picture;
  • choose a procedure date that fits around work, travel and other wedding plans.

If the surgeon suggests waiting, or trying other options first, an early consultation means there is still time to follow that advice.

“The full result takes about a year, so I encourage grooms to have the procedure 12 months or more before the wedding. A little extra time means the shedding and early regrowth stages are well behind them. I would always rather plan early than rush.”

What does the timeline look like, counting back from the wedding?

The example below assumes the procedure takes place about 14 months before the wedding. That leaves a cushion of around two months after the full result usually shows.

Before the wedding After the procedure What to expect
15 to 18 months Not yet Consultation, hairline design and booking a date
About 14 months Day of the procedure DHI under local anaesthesia, with no stitches
About 13 months First few weeks Transplanted hairs often shed, which is expected
About 11 months Around 3 months New growth usually starts to appear
About 2 months Around 12 months The full result usually shows
Wedding day Around 14 months Time for a final trim and styling

If the wedding is less than a year away, a consultation is still worthwhile. A surgeon can tell you honestly what to expect by the date, or suggest scheduling the procedure after the wedding instead.

How can you plan around the shedding and early growth stages?

The first few months are the in-between phase. Some redness and small scabs are common in the first days. The transplanted hairs often fall out within weeks, and new hair takes time to come through.

  • Engagement events. If there is an engagement party or shoot, hold it before the procedure if you can, or once new growth is well under way.
  • Work and travel. Booking the procedure just before a few days off lets the first stage of healing happen quietly at home.
  • Headwear. Tight caps press on new grafts, so ask your surgeon when a loose covering is fine.
  • Haircuts. Ask the clinic when you can have your first cut, and tell your barber about the procedure.

It also helps to share the timeline with your photographer and stylist. They can plan angles and styling for any pre-wedding shoots during the growing-in months.

Should a groom consider a beard transplant too?

For some grooms, a fuller beard matters as much as the hairline, especially for the close-up portraits. A beard transplant follows a similar principle, moving follicles into the cheeks, jawline or moustache area.

At Alborj Hair Clinic, where Dr Ziakas leads beard transplants, most clients need 2,000 to 2,500 grafts, depending on how much coverage they want. Trimming can usually start after 4 weeks and full shaving after 6 weeks.

Growth starts within about three months, and full density shows at 9 to 12 months. The same rule applies, then: book a year or more ahead.

If you want both the scalp and the beard treated, ask the surgeon how to schedule them so both are ready in time.

How should a groom prepare in the final weeks?

By the last couple of months, the waiting is over and the focus shifts to grooming. A few simple steps help the result look its sharpest on the day:

  • Do a trial run. Try the wedding hairstyle with your barber or stylist, and note the products used.
  • Time the final cut. Many grooms like a cut a week or two before the wedding, so it has time to settle.
  • Mind the sun. Shade and a hat before any outdoor shoot help avoid a red, sunburnt scalp in the photos.
  • Ask any last questions. If your plan includes a review at around a year, use it to raise anything still on your mind.

Then relax. The transplanted hair is your own, and on the day it can be styled just like the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is six months enough time before the wedding?

Usually not for the full result. Growth tends to begin around month three, but the finished look takes about a year to appear.

Can I have a haircut before the wedding?

Yes, once your clinic says it is fine. When the result has fully grown in, transplanted hair can be cut and styled like the rest of your hair.

What if the wedding date moves forward?

Tell your surgeon, who can explain what stage the hair is likely to be at by the new date. A later date simply gives the result more time.

Will the transplanted hair last beyond the wedding?

Yes. Transplanted follicles that have taken hold normally carry on growing for life. The original hair around them may still thin with age, which a good plan allows for.
